Liena

A lone liena about to scavenge on a dead Bosotapirid.

Liena is a future descendant of spotted hyenas that survived and has spread into Asia and then into North America through a landbridge that connects Alaska with Siberia. They are one of the biggest land mammal predators on Earth, having the size between the Pleistocene short-faced bear and the Eocene Andrewsarchus, making lienas the top apex predators, filling the similar niche to lions of Africa and Asia and tigers of Asia. Lienas are mostly predators, but can be scavengers in case if they were unsuccessful in hunting their prey or if they are too sick, injured, young, or old to hunt.

Evolution[]

Hyena

The spotted hyena was the early ancestor of the liena.

After the Late Holocene ended, humans are now gone, leaving for new galaxies, but it was already too late for many (if not all) of the large carnivores of North America. Hyenas of Africa, however, have survived the mass slaughter caused by humans and had spread into Asia and North America, where, in North America, they thrived due to lack of competition from most predators like North American wolves. Some groups of spotted hyena eventually grew much bigger and more bear-like in build. They also grew stronger teeth and jaws, perfect for crushing bones of even the largest of animals they live alongside. They also became more predatory, being able to compete with predator dylanuses and the spotted hyenas that remained unchanged from their ancestors. This group of spotted hyenas has evolved into lienas.
